Aim: To address the employment and workplace issues associated with the resources boom in WA. In particular we will look at new (and more traditional) issues linked to the segmentation of the economy and the workforce; restructuring the state; the gender wage gap; uneven development; employment and social factors facing remote and indigenous communities; the use of immigrant labour and innovative labour practices (e.g. FIFO and 457 visas); skill development; distributional issues; and industrial relations challenges around OH&S, bargaining, union recognition and organising in remote locations.

To bring together academics, practitioners and policy advisers to workshop the issues faced in WA – notably whether the issues and potential solutions “are different” from the rest of Australia. We are soliciting participation, organising keynote presentations and plan to have a journal special issue and/or a book linked to the presentations/papers.

Location and Dates: Graduate School of Business, Curtin University, Murray St, Perth, May 27-28 2013; Commence: lunchtime on 27 May; Finish: mid-afternoon 28 May. A cocktail event for the workshop will be held on May 27 at 6pm.

      National Wage Conference

Vietnam Wage Policy in the Context of a Market Economy and Economic Integration

As Vietnam enters more fully into regional and global economic integration, it is crucial that wage fixing and wage adjustment policies and practices are strengthened to find the right balance between promoting and encouraging sustainable enterprises and also providing workers a fair share of enterprise productivity gains. This conference will bring together experiences from the key industrial relations actors in Vietnam, international ILO specialists and lessons learned from other countries in the region, to provide timely inputs for policy makers and practitioners to continue to improve the policy framework for wage adjustment in Vietnam.
